As much as I love to claim that this century is probably the best century to live in—thanks to unrestricted access to valuable information—I can’t deny the flip side. Today, you can learn almost anything, stay updated on events happening across continents, and leverage the AI revolution that has made life easier and faster.
But with every great tool comes a risk. As sociologist Robert K. Merton explained in his law of unintended consequences, innovations designed to bring positive change often carry hidden downsides. That’s a discussion for another day, but I had to start here to set the stage. Stick with me—you’ll soon see why.
Now, let’s talk about the phrase: “trapped in an identity crisis.”
When you hear it, what comes to mind? What comes to your mind right now? Drop it in the comments below—I’d love to know.
Have you ever felt uncertain about which path to take, what decision to make, or which belief system to adopt, especially when every opinion you’ve sought only made you more confused?
I have. And here’s my story.
About five years ago, I was in that exact phase—searching for my true identity. Not because I was clueless, but because I had so many abilities and interests that I didn’t know which one to run with. I was naturally gifted at picking up skills quickly. If I watched someone do something—even for the first time—I could replicate it almost immediately.
On one hand, I had a natural talent for building electronic devices from scratch. On another, I was deeply passionate about music—I played instruments, sang, and even did backup vocals in church. And if that wasn’t enough, people around me often called me a “counselor” because I was the go-to person for advice.
But my uncontrolled appetite for learning pushed me into a confusing loop. I had too many skills and no clarity on which to prioritize. I spent 3–4 years in this indecision—riding with whatever life threw at me.
First, I wanted to be a software engineer, but without a laptop, I switched to graphic design. From there, I explored marketing—affiliate, network, and advertising. Then came digital entrepreneurship. Somewhere in between, I dabbled in web3, later pursued an Executive Master’s in Project Management, and eventually found my way into entrepreneurship—where I finally started Gownex Technology Company.
Looking back, I laugh at how confused I must have looked 🤦♂️. But it also shows how much time, effort, energy, and resources can be wasted when you don’t have clarity of direction.
So the question is: how do you identify yourself so clearly that you can be confident in your choices?
There’s no one-size-fits-all answer. But from my journey, I’ve realized the root of most identity crises is a lack of self-discovery. Until you know yourself, your strengths, your values, and your natural path—you’ll keep riding life’s waves without direction.
That’s why in my next episode, I’ll be sharing practical steps to discover yourself and align your decisions with your true identity and life goals.
